Submitted for the 'Nestiv Housing Values" national design competition, SOL-HAB is a passive solar single family habitat designed for the mountain-west and southwestern regions of the United States. Due to its high percentage of annual sunshine and wide daily and seasonal temperature variations, this region is ideal for capturing and effectively utilizing solar heat. SOL-HAB takes advantage of this location. Its flexible floor plan can be configured in one of four ways to adapt to its given site. This is primarily to allow the bedrooms to consistently be oriented toward the south. The "night zone" then collects and retains solar heat during the winter day thru a trombe wall, and slowly releases the heat at night, warming the space when occupied by way of radiation.
